The gut and vaginal microbiomes are essential for maintaining female reproductive health. An imbalance in these microbial communities, known as dysbiosis, has been linked to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, recurrent pregnancy loss, and infertility. Emerging research highlights the potential of microbiome-targeted therapies, including probiotics and personalized treatments, in addressing these reproductive challenges.

In my recent book titled FERTILITY: Why Microbes, Weight & Nutrition Matter, I explored many hundreds of studies from peer-reviewed journals and other respected sources and came to the conclusion that fertility can be improved. Indeed, a dysbiotic vaginal or gut microbiota may be the very issue that is preventing conception or a healthy pregnancy. Probiotics, simple diet changes, or a daily nutritional supplement are among the evidence-based suggestions that may enhance natural or assisted fertility.

Today I came across a 2025 review article that adds to my compilation completed in 2023. Emerging Therapeutic Approaches in Women’s Reproductive Health: Current Advances in Fertility Enhancement and Management delivers a brief and concise roundup of the manner in which the microbiome intersects with fertility.

If you, or someone you know, is struggling with infertility, the practical advice in both my book and this review for restoring a healthy vaginal and gut microbiota should be a first stop on the journey to a healthy baby.
